Last month, FMG’s Kelly Stuart was named Gallup Manager of the Year at the Gallup at Work Summit in Omaha, Nebraska. Kelly, who is FMG’s Manager of Claims Capability was one of 10 worldwide finalists and to be recognised on the global stage was quite a feat for the Palmerston North local.

Organisations invited to apply for the Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award are asked to nominate one manager who consistently affects the overall employee experience and achieves high performance levels, retention and team engagement. FMG put Kelly forward for the award and she is the first manager from New Zealand to win the top spot.

Kelly joined FMG in July 2017 as a Learning and Capability Consultant before moving through the ranks to lead the claims lodgement team.

“I’ve been a fan of Gallup for a long time and as a leader have always prioritised my people’s engagement. The last organisation I worked for also used Gallup to measure engagement, and even before I started working at FMG, my teams consistently scored in the 90th percentile. I’m proud to say I continued that trend while working here.” Kelly said.

The win follows a big year for Kelly and her team at FMG, following hot on the heels of Cyclone Gabrielle and the largest claims event in FMG’s 119-year history.

“Everybody wins when employees have more best days at work and when their wellbeing is made a top priority. FMG’s vision is to help build strong and prosperous rural communities, and the experiences we provide our clients with depend a great deal on how we all feel about our jobs and workplace” concluded Kelly.

FMG was also recognised at the awards, being named one of 40 Gallup Exceptional Workplaces from around the world in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

About the Gallup and the Exceptional Workplace Awards

Gallup is the external organisation FMG uses to administer employee engagement results. Gallup use a survey known as Q12 to measure 12 different ‘drivers’ of engagement within workplaces around the world.

Like many other organisations, FMG uses Gallup results as an indicator to help understand employee engagement, wellbeing and how many ‘best days at work’ their people are experiencing.

For nearly two decades, Gallup has recognized world-class organizations with the Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award. This prestigious award is reserved for organizations that meet demanding standards set by the most comprehensive workplace study ever conducted, which includes analysis of more than 2.7 million workers across 100,000+ teams.

So, what makes a workplace exceptional? For the world’s best workplaces, engagement isn’t a check-the-box activity in the form of an annual workplace survey. It’s integrated seamlessly into a workplace culture that is unique to them.

Exceptional Workplaces Need Exceptional Managers

Managers matter. And their talent in the role (or lack thereof) directly affects how employees experience the workplace. Gallup data find that managers account for up to 70% of the variation in employee engagement scores.

Gallup created the Manager of the Year Award to honour managers' importance -- for the workplace at large and for the people they manage. Organizations invited to apply for the Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award are asked to nominate one manager who consistently affects the overall employee experience and achieves high performance levels, retention and team engagement.
