FMG is proud to introduce the two FMG Agriculture Scholarship recipients for 2025, Penny Ranger from Waotu, and Shamus Young from Tapanui.
For the last 20 years, FMG has offered two scholarships for students studying an agricultural degree at Massey, Waikato, or Lincoln Universities. The scholarship recipients receive $5,000 towards their tuition fees per academic year of their agriculture-based degree.
Penny Ranger
Penny was raised on a sheep and beef farm in Waotu, a small rural community in South Waikato. Being part of the everyday operations on the farm with her dad from a young age ignited Penny’s love for agriculture.
“On our family farm, I gained hands-on experience in the agricultural industry, which shaped my understanding of the industry's challenges and rewards, sparking a strong connection to rural life and the sector that supports that.”
As a first-year student at Lincoln University studying a Bachelor of Commerce in Agriculture, Penny is excited to develop a comprehensive understanding of the business and financial aspects of the industry and to connect with like-minded people.
Penny looks forward to making a positive difference through the opportunities and wide range of career paths that the agriculture sector offers.
“My advice for anyone considering a career in agriculture or applying for the FMG scholarship is to go for it. There is always room for passionate, dedicated people who want to make a difference.”
Shamus Young
Coming from a family-run sheep and grain farm in Tapanui, West Otago, Shamus Young is focused on finding sustainable solutions to challenges facing the agricultural sector, particularly in the wool industry.
With ambitions to bridge the gap between the economic and environmental challenges of the agriculture sector and the hands-on daily operations of running a successful farm, Shamus is studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Agriculture at Lincoln University.
“Studying for such a degree will give me a strong foundation in both agricultural science and business management, which are essential to driving sustainable practices and innovations in the agricultural sector.”
Shamus aspires to own his own farm one day, focusing on improving efficiency, embracing new technologies, and contributing to, and helping to, promote the industry’s growth - particularly by showcasing the value of wool and other natural products on a global scale.
Shamus encourages more students to get involved in the agricultural industry.
“It’s an exciting, evolving field with opportunities for everyone. From science and technology to business and environmental management, there is something for everyone and no one day is the same.”
Congratulations to Penny and Shamus for this impressive achievement. Learn more about FMG’s scholarships here.
